The Cloak – Reflections and Refractions

I, Bara AlMakadma, the president of the Drama Club, have taken some days off to write the play that we will act on the 26th of May, of 2010 (God willing). The play is titled “The Cloak – Reflections and Refractions”. It is meant to be suitable for our community audience, springing from our culture. It is oriented towards problems in our society, here in Saudi Arabia, but should still be suitable for wide spectrum audience. This first play will be in English as to invite the different nationality doctors and students of the university. Certainly, next year we plan to have an artistic Arabic performance, and rather than have it limited to the university, invitations will extend to the wider community.

“The Cloak – Reflections and Refractions” is Alfaisal University’s Drama Club’s first production. It is the University’s first play at all sense its foundation. It’s meant to be a promotional play discussing problems that are found in our university and community, in an exaggerative fashion of amplification to pinpoint the sources of real life conflicts. The play is inspired by James Joyce’s short story “Araby” Published in Dublinners.

Here are secial thanks to Aman Talal Inayah who spent a lot of time helping me write the script with his insightful ideas, and comments. I would also like to thank Ammar Y Awaad, who in preperation for launch of this project has created our Alfaisal Drama Club group on Facebook. I would like to thank Abdullah Alshammari, who is a very active member of the club, and who is always an aid to solving many problems. Finally, thanks to Ahmad Adi for putting in the idea of the climax of the play! – The play could not have been done without the help of each one of these members.
